Palenque and Agua Azul

150 miles NE of San Cristobal de las Casas are the Mayan ruins of Palenque. It is a beautiful site, surrounded by dense jungle. We could hear howler monkeys as we toured the ruins in the late afternoon. The site is believed to have been settled and built from 300-900 A.D. though people lived here as early as 300 B.C.

The next day we visited Agua Azul, another beautiful water fall.

After walking the length of the falls we returned to a pool at the bottom for swimming.
